It was a hopeless mess.

Without the map, River had no clue which way to go. Back home, she knew how to tell time and direction based on the position of the sun—any Harvester worth their salt knew that—but that was from her mountaintop. Surely the sun’s position meant something different this far north.

They took a chance with Blue’s compass but soon found it useless. There weren’t proper north and south symbols, just a triangle on one side and three dots on the other. Blue told her the triangle was supposed to lead toward Dragon Mountain. But since the compass was meant to be used in Gerbera, they weren’t sure it would work correctly on the other side of the mountain, which was now leagues behind them. They’d also tried to summon back the strange golden thread to lead them, but it had vanished. And neither River nor Blue had any idea what it was, where it came from, or even if they could trust it.

So River did the best she could, since it was the Rider’s job to navigate. But every few minutes she mentally kicked herself for losing the blasted map. A few times, the beginnings of an apology hesitated on the tip of her tongue, but each time she stopped herself. She was still too angry about everything.

“Can we stop for a drink?” Blue asked. “There’s a river up ahead.”

River craned her head. “I don’t see it.”

“I can hear it.”

River grunted. She’d filled her canteen with the cleanest snow she could find at their crash-landing spot, but that had been hours ago and it was already running low.

“Dragons don’t have to drink,” she told him.

“Well, I want to,” Blue grumbled.

“But dragons don’t need—”

“River. I am a dragon. And I’m telling you. I want a drink.”

River clamped her mouth shut grumpily as she followed Blue—who followed his ears—until they found a small river cutting through the woods. The water trickled gently, and a few fish darted by. River’s stomach growled. While she’d been taught to fish and hunt, she wasn’t particularly good at it.

Blue bent down to take a drink, and River filled her canteen. For some reason, Sage Jackson’s annoying grinning face came to mind. Sage was probably a great hunter. River muttered a few choice words under her breath. Then she picked up a rock and threw it into the water. Her blue dragon scales glittered in the sun, which only darkened her mood.

“River?”

“Ugh. What?”

“I was wondering how your people grow dragons. Your Elder said your ancestors visited the Fates to learn how—is that true?”

River nodded. This was one of her favorite stories, actually. She sat down on a smooth boulder and took a long swig of water. “There is an old woman, older than time, who is the Knower of All Things. Some say she’s one of the Fates. Others believe she created the universe.”

“She must be really old.”

“Hush, and listen to the story,” River scolded. “So remember, during the wars, the dragons were dying, with no way to repopulate because of the Dragon’s Curse.
